Breakfast With The Birds

Hazy dawn on our
terrace; in verdant shadows
an orchestra tunes,

tremulous scales meld
into liquid symphony;
leaf curtain quivers.

Rose-throated becard,
shy blush suffusing her breast,
peeps from ceiba branch.

Bold honeycreepers,
sapphire plumage polished bright,
pirouette, red-legged.

Scarlet or gold trimmed,
swooping tanagers flaunt their
streamlined livery.

Jewelled hummingbird,
iridescent flash of wing,
paints a rainbow’s end.

We two drab giants
lumber from our front row seats
dwarfed by their beauty.
